So before I launched my first novel, Sketchy Tacos, I had no idea what went into a book launch. For a long time, I harbored visions of the good old days when all an author had to do was write the book. Then the publishing machine would take the pretty book and get it out into the world. That vision is no longer reality.
In addition to an author, a writer now much also be a publicist, marketer, and amateur web designer to name a few. So once the book is written, the work has only just begun.
Three months of prep went into the book launch. To get my full launch plan enter your email below (or click here if you’re reading this on email or RSS feed).
Day of Book Launch
I woke up in the morning to find my novel on my Kindle. It was an incredibly strange and awesome feeling! After the squealing, I set to work getting the word out on social media. The key here is the human element and genuine excitement. If it looks like just another advertisement, readers will scroll right on by. So instead, I made it personal! My posts were centered on how excited I was to share this big life event with everyone I knew. I spent the morning spreading the word and responding to the wonderful, supportive comments that my friends and followers had made.
That afternoon, I had an interview with the Indiana Daily News — my alma mater’s newspaper. It was short, but sweet. And a lot of fun. My aunt gave me some great tips on interview prep that include always staying positive and on message! Think of the quotes you want them to use and then stop talking.
I spent the rest of the afternoon preparing for that night’s Facebook Launch Party. I prepped questions and pictures ahead of time as well as topics for the live elements. That way during the two-hour party, I didn’t have to worry about coming up with new topics. I could focus all my energy on responding to the awesome people who showed up.
By the time the party ended at about 7:15, I was exhausted! The events kept me hopping all day and it was a huge emotional high. It was a lovely day. I couldn’t have asked for a better one!
Week of Book Launch
I set up guest posts every day and I posted on my own blog. I promoted each of these posts and visited throughout the day to respond to comments.
Why are guest posts important? This allows you to reach readers outside of your immediate circle. It’s easy to talk to family and friends, but tapping in to other bloggers’ audiences is how you start to get the rest of the world to notice your book out of the millions of options available.
I was super nervous to approach other bloggers. I was a nobody. Why would they want to bother with me? But you know what I found? Genuinely lovely women who were incredibly kind and helpful. They are amazing bloggers and you should head over to their awesome web communities (using the links above) and check them out!
Weekend of Book Launch
It’s party time! My husband invited all our friends over to celebrate the launch! I served guacamole (learn how to make legit Mexican guacamole in this video) and other snacks. We chatted and had fun with the picture wall. And later we ordered pizza and played games. It was a great way to end a wonderful week!
So where to go from here? That’s a good question. I’ll be sharing with you as I learn. In the meantime, I’ll continue to celebrate the Sketchy Tacos launch, working on books 2 & 3 in the International Adventures series, and gear up for a few more international adventures of my own!
